J-1 Visa: Camp Counselor Program

About The Program

    • The Camp Counselor program allows foreign nationals to work at summer camps for kids for a maximum of 4 months.
    • This position provides housing, meals as well as pay.
    • Foreign nationals must go through a designated sponsor. Camp counselors cannot participate in the program on a tourist Visa or an ESTA Visa.

Important Information

  • No Staff Jobs
    • Camp counselors shouldn’t accept staff jobs such as:
      • Administrative Personnel
      • Janitors
      • Cooks
      • Dishwashers
  • Repeat Participation Allowed
    • Repeat participation is allowed (many camp counselors are University students doing this program every summer during University.)
    • Can be a camp counselor more than once.
    • There are several types of camps:
      • Nonprofit
      • Religious
      • Special Needs 
      • Girl Scouts
      • Boy Scouts

      • Underprivileged
      • Specialty (Specific sport or art for example) 

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

    • Proficient in English
    • At least 18 years old
    • A post-secondary student, youth worker, teacher, or individual with specialized skills
    • Experienced working with children
    • Having a clean criminal background record

If you need proof of English proficiency, we would recommend TEFL (one of the most widely accepted exams worldwide.)

Additional Information

Program dates vary by country, but students must have program dates within their academic calendar break. You must secure your housing before you arrive in the U.S. (Most sponsors help with this). The better your English, the better job opportunities you will have.

J-1 Visa Essentials

    • You must be a foreign national with supporting documentation of education and/or relevant work experience
    • You must show proof of financial means to support yourself while in the U.S.
    • You must not show immigrant intent
    • You must not displace an American worker
